Yorkshire terrier found beaten with life threatening skull fractures in Hong Kong.
CASE ONE
Hong Kong police were investigating an animal cruelty case on Thursday in which a nine-year-old Yorkshire terrier suffered serious head injuries, with an operation to save the dog recovering 18 skull fragments.
The Non-Profit Making Veterinary Services Society earlier said on Facebook that when the animal arrived at its clinic in Mong Kok, it was diagnosed with skull fractures and brain contusions and immediate surgery was required.
The organisation commented: -
“During the surgery, the veterinarian removed as many as 18 fragments inside the skull. The situation was heartbreaking and worrying…The Yorkshire terrier is now in the intensive care unit and still in life-threatening condition.”
It added that the pet’s owner suspected her dog had been abused. Police launched an investigation after receiving a report from the woman, 44, on Wednesday.
The dog had been left in the care of the owner’s mother and elder sister in Tsuen Wan, a source familiar with the case said. The mother left for a holiday in Thailand on Sunday. The source added the investigation showed that the elder sister went to work on Monday night, leaving the mother’s boyfriend and the dog at home. He added: -
“The elder sister returned home on Tuesday morning and found the Yorkshire terrier unconscious in the flat.”
The woman took the dog to the Mong Kok clinic for treatment.
Animal cruelty is punishable by up to three years in jail and a HK$200,000 fine.
CASE TWO
Suspected Husky Abuse
In a separate case, police arrested a 22-year-old man on suspicion of ill-treating his husky in Sha Tin.
The case came to light after a video posted online earlier this week showed the dog in a metal cage with its head hanging out of an opening, before a lid was closed on the animal and someone’s hand could be seen pressing down on the flap in an apparent attempt to briefly strangle it.
Detectives arrested the suspect in his flat at Chap Wai Kon New Village on Ngau Pei Sha Street on Wednesday night.
Police found the 18-month-old husky safe, along with a seven-month-old puppy of the same breed, at the flat.
The investigation suggested the alleged act was a punishment for the dog’s bad behaviour, another source said.
The source added the video was posted online by the suspect’s girlfriend in an attempt to seek advice on how to train the dog.
Police said no apparent injuries were found on the animals, which were sent to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals for examination.
