The "Dog Dog Shipcation" Event

HKALPO had the fortune to attend to the "Dog Dog Shipcation" event this weekend! The event was co-hosted by SPCA and Star Ferry, and it was the iconic ferry’s FIRST-EVER dog-friendly harbour tour in Hong Kong.

One of the key objective of the event was to promote pet-friendly public transportation in Hong Kong, making the city a better place for our furry family members. According to Lucci, a staff member at the SPCA, the event took around half a year of hard work for it to come to fruition. Main concerns of the co-hosts were potential medical emergencies and accidents that may happen on board. For such reasons, arrangements such as limitation of capacity, provision of both human and dog life jackets, and emergency support were all present during the event.

Fortunately all the pups were all on their best behaviour, quietly sitting and taking in the view of the harbour next to their owner, and the event was a success . Lucci also noted that hopefully with the success of this event, other local transportation companies will be able to be more open to the idea of allowing dogs on public transports, but more importantly that animal law in Hong Kong will slowly update to reflect the sentiment of local animal community, where our furry friends and humans will be encouraged to live harmoniously in this city.

We brought our four legged friend along for the event and she had the best time making friends and enjoying her generous on-board meal and goody bag items gifted by the sponsors. The humans had a great time dressing up the pup with a sailor‘a cap and bandana. The event was extremely well organised.

Few days prior to the day of the event, we received an SMS confirmation providing us with our check-in number and details. Upon arriving at the pier, there was a check-in counter where all participating dogs were vetted to ensure they were microchipped and their vaccines were up to date.

Upon boarding, there were displays of safety precautions for animals and humans. There were also pictures of dogs currently available for adoption at SPCA! The event was so dog-sentric it was a great time.

If you’re an animal lover, you and your furry friend must support the next Dog Dog Shipcation event.

Thank you to SPCA for inviting us to attend the event!
