Stricter implementations against feeding wild animals.

Recently, the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (“FEHD”) and the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (“AFCD”) have conducted a series of operations against wild animal feeding in Hong Kong.

The two departments have carried out ‘blitz operations’ to counter incidents of wild animal feeding and dirtying public spaces on Mount Parker Road, Greig Road and Shum Wan Road. At Shum Wan Road, one person was reported to have disposed food remnants without authority and was subsequently prosecuted.

Within this past year, blitz operations have led to about 80 prosecutions against people who have contravened cleanliness regulations in the Southern district, out of which 20 offenders received a fixed penalty notices of HK$1500, with an additional 60 having a summons issued against them.

The FEHD has put forward public education campaigns to warn people not to feed wild animals. A spokesperson from FEHD stated that: -

“The FEHD attaches great importance to hygiene problems caused by fouling of public places due to wild animal feeding, and has all along been adopting specific measures to improve hygiene conditions taking into account the actual situation in the areas where wild animals frequently appear.”

Feeding of wild animals affect not only their natural behaviour but will also disrupt the ecosystems they are living in. Such actions may also provide environmental hygiene and nuisance problems. To learn more about wild animal feeding, please visit http://nofeeding.afcd.gov.hk/
